Speed limiters gain support in Quebec

The proposal to activate speed limiters on trucks is getting political support in Quebec.

An all-party committee of the Quebec National Assembly is recommending that it be mandatory that speed limiters be activated on all trucks and buses and that the maximum speed be set at 105 kilometers/hour. The Commission des transports et de l'environnement submitted its report June 8 to the National Assembly.

All members of the commission, mandated by the National Assembly to examine specific road safety issues, are MNAs. The same commission made other recommendations on use of cell phones, electronic speed detection on roads where police presence is difficult, and winter tires. The report likely will be debated in autumn 2006. The Quebec Trucking Association actively participated in the deputations to the commission.
