    Pilgrim's Pride Corp announced a net income of $2.8 million for the first fiscal quarter ended Dec 28, 2002, a $10.2 million decrease compared with net income in the prior year's first fiscal quarter of $13.0 million.

    The company also announced net sales for the first fiscal quarter ended Dec 28, 2002, of $627.4 million, a $28.6 million decrease compared with the $656.0 million for the same period in 2001.

    Pilgrim's Pride employs more than 24,500 persons and operates poultry processing and further processing plants, distribution centers, hatcheries and feed mills in Texas, Arkansas, Arizona, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia, and Mexico.
