SHEETZ INC is a privately held convenience retail chain. The Sheetz family members still run the company founded by their brother Bob Sheetz based on the principles and values with which he ran his business. They were taught by their parents to be generous and humble and to give back to the community. This philosophy has been a cornerstone in their business for more than 50 years. As a result, Sheetz is incredibly involved in community activities, sponsorships, and charities. Sheetz calls it “Connecting With Our Communities.”
With more than 330 stores in six states, Sheetz stays connected with its communities in various ways. In 2006, Sheetz donated almost $2 million to various causes. Youth sports and youth development activities are the biggest areas where Sheetz tries to make a difference. This includes everything from little league baseball and pee wee football teams, to girl scouts, to high school basketball teams, to college football. Sheetz gives money to educational programs, mentoring programs, and after school tutoring programs.
In particular, Sheetz stays involved with its communities through Sheetz Family Christmas. Since employees started the Sheetz Family Christmas program in 1992, they have raised more than $4.3 million and have accompanied more than 36,000 needy children from Sheetz's six-state region on a one-day shopping spree to fill their holiday wish lists. For the past two years Sheetz has taken an additional step, donating $300,000 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of America. The money is used to send children with life-threatening medical conditions on trips to Disney World and other places.
Sheetz also is a proud supporter and one of the largest, single contributors to Special Olympics Pennsylvania having contributed more than $1 million to Special Olympics since 1991. In addition, Sheetz employees have produced and catered thousands of lunches for Special Olympics' events and actively volunteer their time to help with the summer and winter games.
Sheetz did its part to raise funds when Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast. The stores collected money and matched customer donations. This totaled more than $468,000. The company also sent five of its distribution trucks to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, loaded with $250,000 in food and water to feed thousands of displaced families.
