A boycott of Canadian seafood initiated by The Humane Society of the United States has been joined by more than 245 restaurants on the West Coast of the United States.

The boycott was begun in March 2005 to help bring a halt to the yearly Canadian seal hunt, an off-season activity by commercial fishermen on the eastern Canadian coast. Seventy-plus restaurants in Oregon and Washington have joined 175 California restaurants in California in backing the boycott.

According to the Washington DC-based Humane Society, exports of Canadian snow crabs to the United States have fallen by $290 million since the boycott started.

Restaurants have promised to boycott Canadian snow crab, all seafood from eastern Canada, or all Canadian seafood until the seal hunt stops completely.
