Western Star Trucks announces a line of 2004 engines from Mercedes-Benz, Detroit Diesel, and Caterpillar.
Mercedes-Benz
The Mercedes-Benz MBE4000 engine is offered on Western Star 4900 FA and 4900 SA models. Features include electronically controlled high-pressure injector pumps, air-to-air charge cooling with a matched turbocharger, and data logging to monitor fuel consumption. By using an Exhaust Gas Recirculation system (EGR), the engines meet 2004 EPA emission regulations without requiring aftertreatment devices.
The MBE4000 offers an electronic control system that allows the engine to be customized.
With a standard exhaust brake, MBE4000 produces additional horsepower when combined with the optional Turbo Brake. The 12.8-liter engine uses advanced materials and components for an superior power-to-weight ratio. Six-unit injection pumps are driven from the camshaft for an accurate injection control, four valves per cylinder allow the engine to breathe better, and a single-cylinder air compressor uses less horsepower. The MBE4000 comes with a full two-year, unlimited mileage warranty for truck applications.
Detroit Diesel
Standard on Western Star 4900 FA, 4900 SA, 4900 EX, and 6900 XD models, the 2004 Detroit Diesel Series 60 engine meets the latest emissions regulations using EGR. The 2004 engine does not require an aftertreatment device or any changes in usual maintenance procedures. Performance features include an EGR cooler with a lightweight tube-in-shell design, and a new electronic fuel injector for a faster response time and increased durability. A variable-geometry turbocharger provides better fuel economy while improving drivability and engine braking.
The 12.7- and 14.0-liter Series 60 engines feature a new DDEC V electronic control that provides additional microprocessor power, four times more memory, and 150 output pins versus the current 81. The 2004 Series 60 also includes a one-piece (Monotherm) piston with a closed oil gallery that reduces friction and allows for a higher compression ratio.
Caterpillar
Western Star offers a line of 2004 Cat engines with Advanced Combustion Emissions Reduction Technology (ACERT) including the C11, C13, and C15 to meet the 2004 EPA standards. Provided on the 4900 FA and 4900 SA models, the C11 engine is offered with ratings from 305 to 370 horsepower and 1,050 to 1,350 ft-lb of torque, and the C13 engine is available with 335 to 430 hp and 1,350 to 1,750 ft-lb of torque. In addition, the C15 engine offers 435 to 550 hp with 1,550 to 1,850 ft-lb of torque on the 4900 FA and 4900 SA, 4900 EX, and 6900 XD.
