A United States Food and Drug Administration agency has indefinitely extended the recommendation for consumers not to eat any fresh spinach or products that contain or are packaged with spinach with a sell-by date of August 17 through October 1.
E coli bacteria from eating California spinach has so far affected 109 people, and one woman in Wisconsin has died from the bacteria.
Dr David Acheson, chief medical officer with the FDA's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, extended the recommendation against eating fresh spinach.
The affected product was packed by Natural Selection Foods LLC under licensing agreements with other companies. The spinach recall includes these brands with “Best if Used by Dates” of August 17 to October 1:
Dole, Natural Selection Foods, Pride of San Juan, Earthbound Farm, Bellissima, Rave Spinach, Emeril, Sysco, O Organic, Fresh Point, River Ranch, Superior, Nature's Basket, Pro-Mark, Compliments, Trader Joe's, Ready Pac, Jansal Valley, Cheney Brothers, Coastline, D'Arrigo Brothers, Green Harvest, Mann, Mills Family Farm, Premium Fresh, Snoboy, The Farmer's Market, Tanimura & Antle, President's Choice, Cross Valley, and Riverside Farms.
