Thousands of Teamsters rallied at 19 American ports February 24, protesting the Bush administration’s decision to sell access to P&O Ports’ United States terminal operations to Dubai Ports World.
“We will not stand by and allow our homeland security to be compromised,” said James P Hoffa, Teamsters Union general president. “This is a bad deal for workers and a bad deal for the security of America’s ports.”
Rallies took place at noon, local times, at ports in Baltimore MD, Boston MA, Charleston SC, Chicago IL, Detroit MI, Houston TX, Los Angeles CA, Miami FL, New Bedford MA, New Orleans LA, Norfolk VA, Oakland CA, Philadelphia PA, Port Hueneemee CA, Portland OR, Savannah GA, Seattle WA, and Wilmington DE.
Another rally, to be attended by Sen Bob Menendez (D-NJ), was set for February 27 at Port Newark in New Jersey.
