PFS plans three facilities in China

Preferred Freezer Services (PFS) opened its first semi-automated, 25,000-square-meter temperature-controlled warehouse in Lingang Park, Shanghai, China. The company’s second facility is scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2012 in Waigaoqiao, while a third facility is under construction in Tianjin.

The company’s new Lingang facility celebrated its grand opening in late November with more than 200 attendees. These included local business leaders from the Shanghai Lingang Administration Committee, Lingang Economic Development Group, Yangshan Customs, and Inspection and Quarantine. Also in attendance were numerous customers, vendors and business partners. PFS, one of the world’s largest public temperature-controlled warehouse operations, and YiDA Group, one of China’s largest developers of commercial parks and residential communities, have jointly invested in the development of China’s cold chain and logistics industry.

According to PFS, “cold chain” means more than building state-of-the-industry warehouses; it is about raising the standards for refrigerated frozen foods and their distribution. The company is committed to creating excellence in food handling safety, especially with China’s growth consumption rate increase to more than 4 trillion dollars by 2020, as researched by Homi Kharas and Geoffrey Gertz from the Wolfensohn Center for Development.

The Lingang Park facility is minutes from the Yangshan port, regarded by many as the world’s largest cargo port. The Yangshan port is expected to handle more than 30 million TEUs of containers annually in 2011.
