Ryder selects ORBCOMM telematics for its fleet
ORBCOMM Inc (Nasdaq: ORBC) announced that Ryder System Inc has selected it to deliver a comprehensive telematics system tailored for Ryder’s fleet of more than 30,000 refrigerated, dry van, and flatbed trailers.
The system will provide connectivity through ORBCOMM’s state-of-the-art hardware and a web-based analytics platform for fleet management. Ryder will use the ORBCOMM system in both its lease and rental trailer fleets.
This system will make it easier for Ryder customers to monitor their assets in real time, maximizing visibility and utilization. In addition, the technology can provide refrigerated trailer monitoring and control for Ryder’s cold chain customers to improve quality, mitigate product spoilage, and ensure compliance with new food safety regulations.
For its refrigerated trailers, Ryder is using ORBCOMM’s RT6000+, a two-way reefer monitoring and control device that provides temperature, fuel management, maintenance, and logistical applications services for the command and control of temperature-controlled cargo.
For its dry van and flatbed trailers, Ryder is using ORBCOMM’s GT1100, an easy-to-install device with a one-inch height profile and small form factor. The GT1100 is sensor-compatible and self-powered with solar recharging technology for low power consumption and long service life in the field. The GT1100 also recently won the 2013 CTIA E-Tech Award for Innovation in Machine-to-Machine (M2M) systems.
ORBCOMM has developed a customized web application for Ryder with advanced data reporting and analytics capabilities to increase in-transit visibility and security of its refrigerated, dry van, and flatbed assets. Using this high-performance technology in conjunction with near-real-time asset data, Ryder can best manage its fleet.
More than 2,000 ORBCOMM systems have already been deployed on Ryder’s trailers, and Ryder will extend the telematics system to its commercial lease and rental customers.
ORBCOMM’s trailer telematics system complements Ryder’s onboard telematics system, RydeSmart, a GPS fleet location, tracking, and vehicle performance management system available on the company’s lease and rental tractor fleet.
