Medlog, the inland transport and logistics arm of the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) Group, recently opened a state-of-the-art, 300,000-sq.-ft. cold chain logistics facility in Savannah, Georgia.

The new facility boasts the largest blast freezing capacity in the United States, the company reported. Designed to expand the global reach of protein suppliers from across the U.S., the facility is expected to create more than 100 jobs and contribute an economic impact of $65 million in Georgia.

“This latest investment will greatly benefit the region and the Port of Savannah, one of the fastest growing ports in the world,” Michael Burton, Medlog USA president, said in a news release. “True to our values, Medlog continuously invests in strategic assets that improve efficiency and global market access for our customers. This ‘crown jewel of the cold storage industry’ demonstrates our commitment to our customers, our attention to their unique needs, and support for the communities in which we operate.”

Engineered to handle frozen and chilled cargo, the temperature-controlled facility has the capacity to store nearly 20,000 freezer and cooler pallets, expanding Medlog’s cold storage solutions for the meat industry. Designed for maximum flexibility, it features convertible storage zones that can be adapted to meet evolving cargo needs, including varying temperature requirements ranging from minus-20 degrees Fahrenheit to 40 degrees F to accommodate perishable goods. The facility allows suppliers to ship up to 3 million pounds of raw protein for rapid freezing and export within a 24-hour period, making it three times as efficient as the 72-hour industry standard.

Built to support rail cargo for inland distribution and equipped with 42 loading docks designed to handle high volumes of imports and exports, the facility provides true multimodal transportation solutions. Its proximity to the Port of Savannah, one of the most connected ports in the nation, enables seamless access to international markets, reinforcing its role as a strategic logistics hub for suppliers across the Southeast and as far as the Midwest.

“Medlog is a committed partner to America’s success, expanding our footprint to better connect U.S. customers to rapidly growing markets,” said Giuseppe Prudente, Medlog chairman. “Today’s investment is the latest in a series of strategic infrastructure projects across the U.S. that enhance our unique ability to serve supply chain requirements. Combined with the world’s largest ocean liner, Medlog’s cold chain integrity and rapidly expanding multimodal transportation solutions are unrivaled. Together, we are creating a logistics ecosystem that provides U.S. exporters a global competitive advantage, strengthens supply chains, and drives economic growth.”

The facility is the latest infrastructure project completed as part of more than a billion dollars in strategic infrastructure investment planned by Medlog in the U.S., the company said. This is in addition to 45 existing U.S. locations, over 1,800 operated trucks, 750,000 annual containers moves, and more than 2,000 chassis.

Medlog has invested over $200 million in the U.S. since 2022.
