Phoenix AZ-based Swift Transportation (NYSE: SWFT) announces a new container-on-flatcar (COFC) intermodal service into and out of Mexico.
The COFC network will operate between the United States and northeastern Mexico, central Mexico, Guadalajara, and Mexico City areas. This service is in conjunction with Swift’s rail partner, Kansas City Southern Railroad, and its subsidiary, Kansas City Southern de Mexico Railroad.
Swift’s new COFC intermodal product expands service to and from Mexico in domestic containers covering all major centers in North America. The company will continue to offer existing trailer on flatcar (TOFC) products to and from Mexico. These two intermodal products serve to complement the over-the-road cross-border business operated in conjunction with Trans-Mex LLC.
A wholly owned subsidiary of Swift in Mexico, Trans-Mex has almost 1,000 employees, 650 trucks, 10 terminals, and operations at all major border crossings and throughout Mexico. It is one of the largest cross-border truckload carriers between Mexico and the United States.
Swift currently owns more than 6,000 53-foot intermodal containers with GPS satellite tracking.
