CSX, Union Pacific begin produce train service

CSX Transportation and Union Pacific have begun a perishable-produce service between California and New York to offer Southern California perishables shippers a high-speed transportation alternative.

The service is also targeting other commodities heading to East Coast markets, such as cheese and frozen food, company officials said. Each train will carry the same amount of produce and perishable items that would be moved by more than 200 trucks, saving 100,000 gallons of diesel per total shipment.

In October 2006, CSX Transportation and Union Pacific began a produce unit train service from Wallula WA and Schenectady NY.
