More than 60 representatives of various food processors and produce shippers from the region attended a recent “Shippers Open House” at the Port of Quincy (WA) Intermodal Terminal to learn about a new expedited intermodal rail service for Washington State produce and perishable shippers.

The open house was hosted by Rail Logistics (www.icoldtrain.com/) with support from Interstate Distributor Company, Columbia Colstor (www.colstor.com/colstorinternational2.htm) and the Port of Quincy (www.portofquincy.org/). During the event, representatives of Rail Logistics and BNSF Railway were on hand to answer questions about the new service from Washington State to the Midwest.

Additionally, the shippers had a chance to view a new “Cold Train Intermodal” 53-foot temperature-controlled container at the Port of Quincy Intermodal Terminal.

These shippers learned about the new intermodal rail service that will begin April 1, 2010, and provide Washington State produce and perishable shippers with a truck-comparable shipping alternative to the Midwest.

The new PNW-Chicagoland Express Intermodal Service will cover 2,000-plus miles in four days. This service is expected to be faster and cheaper, providing shippers and the community with a 50% carbon footprint reduction compared with over-the-road trucks.

The Port of Quincy will be holding a formal grand opening event for the new Cold Train Intermodal Service. This event is set for April 20, 2010, at 1 pm at the Port of Quincy Intermodal Terminal.

The Port of Quincy Intermodal Terminal is a rail cargo handling facility on the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad mainline that runs from Seattle WA to Chicago IL. The terminal includes more than 10,000 feet of track and a new container maintenance and cleaning facility, with nearly 1 million square feet of cold storage warehousing.
