Federal Signal Corporation's PIPS Technology subsidiary has entered into a cooperative agreement with 3M Corporation to provide an electronic vehicle registration (EVR) system for the transportation market segment.

The PIPS and 3M system improves compliance with the vehicle registration process, and provides revenue to governments to help improve transportation systems.

Additionally, said officials, EVR enhances public safety and security, increases accuracy and timeliness of vehicle registration data, and reduces overall costs to administer and maintain a vehicle registration system.

EVR is a fully integrated, turnkey system that incorporates automated license/number plate recognition technology from PIPS, and passive radio frequency identification (RFID) technology.

The system can automatically identify vehicles and validate identity, status, and authenticity of the data associated with that vehicle through vehicle registration databases, insurance information, property tax records, or other characteristics that may be tied to the vehicle.

The first PIPS and 3M EVR system is up and running in Bermuda.
