AP Moller-Maersk has signed an order in Copenhagen, Denmark, with Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering for a new series of 16 containerships. With a record amount of refrigerated cargo capacity, these vessels will be delivered between 2010 and 2012. Offering a nominal capacity of 7,450 TEU, they will be equipped with 1,700 reefer plugs, reportedly the highest number a container vessel has ever carried.

These 16 vessels are designed for transportation between the eastern coast of South America and Asia and Europe. Each will have a waste heat recovery system.

This order comes after one Maersk placed with Hyundai Heavy Industries in June for 18 containerships of 4,500-TEU capacity.
