Prime Inc, the Springfield MO-based transportation company with more than 6,000 refrigerated, flatbed, and tanker operators, has been named Healthiest Company by Everyday Health, a digital health and wellness company.
The inaugural awards program, Everyday Health Awards for Innovation, was launched to honor outstanding achievement in health and wellness technology innovation.
Prime received the honor for its Driver Health and Fitness program, which was implemented in 2012 to address driver obesity and combat metabolic syndrome, which is a cluster of conditions including increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal cholesterol levels. Together, these conditions increase risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Nationwide, 86% of America’s truck drivers are overweight and 57% are clinically obese.
The program, which is the first of its kind in the commercial carrier industry, uses digital health technology to improve driver health.
“With more than 6,000 drivers, we knew that we had to find a technology solution to help monitor and track progress,” said Siphiwe Baleka, Prime’s driver health and fitness coach. “Our drivers use the Body Media Link Armband and the Mio Motiva Drive+ Strapless Heart Rate Watch. Currently, they are losing an average of 19.3 pounds and 7.3% of their body weight in just 13 weeks.”
The company’s entry was displayed at the Everyday Health exhibit in the Digital Health Summit TechZoneat the 2014 International CES conference in Las Vegas NV. Winners were announced at a live award ceremony January 9.
