Transplace, a provider of transportation management services and logistics technology, has developed a Preferred Shipper Checklist to help companies better understand the best practices for becoming a shipper of choice for their carrier partners.

The industry initiative, in collaboration with Transplace’s customer advisory board and more than 25 carrier partners, identified key factors in how carriers evaluate shippers and translated this insight into an scorecard to help shipper organizations achieve “preferred shipper” status with carriers.

“Shippers are placing added focus on improving their transportation operations, which is making it increasingly important that they align their efforts with their carrier partners in order to improve efficiency and drive overall benefits to all parties,” said Ben Cubitt, senior vice-president, engineering and strategic carrier management for Transplace. “Through this industry initiative, we have created a checklist that provides value to both shippers and carriers—especially with consideration to the ongoing truck driver shortage.”

Transplace’s customer advisory board had asked the provider to lead an initiative that would develop a scorecard for shippers to help drive supply chain efficiency, as well as support industry need to recruit and retain truck drivers. Due to the ongoing driver shortage, dwell time has become a major factor in determining preference status of a shipper, and treating drivers with respect and as a valuable asset can impact the way the shipper is viewed by an entire carrier organization.

The initiative, built upon Transplace’s 2014 Preferred Shipper Survey, was a collaboration with more than 25 of the firm’s partner carriers. Some of these partner carriers include: Conway, J B Hunt Transport, Millis Transfer, Landstar, Swift, Team Campbell Logistics, C R England, Smith Transport, Dart Transit, Interstate Distributors, Celadon, Knight Transportation, Marten Transportation, and J&R Shugel.
