With school well underway, it is time for the Mid-Shore Character Counts program to begin. Serving as a Character Coach at Preston (MD) Elementary School is an exciting time for employees of Choptank Transport Inc.

The company has participated in the Character Counts Mid-Shore program for the past nine years. This year, 11 employees from sales and logistics have volunteered their time to be coaches.

Steve Covey, Choptank Transport’s executive vice-president, strongly supports the Character Counts program. “It is an honor to have the opportunity to instill core values in our future leaders,” he said.

Volunteers are asked to speak for 15 to 20 minutes once a week throughout the school year. Topics of discussion rotate around the six pillars of character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. The role of the volunteer is to help the school reinforce these character traits with real-life examples and varied perspectives.

Matt MacCoy, a Choptank Transport area sales manager, is a veteran coach of four years. This year he is teaching Miss Drathman’s third-grade class.

“I love coaching,” said MacCoy. “It is easy to talk about the six pillars because they all relate in some way to what we do here at Choptank, so conveying real world examples from the workplace is easy. The kids are amazing and I look at the opportunity as an honor—it is such a worthwhile program.”

A nationwide, full-service freight management company, Choptank Transport specializes in truckload, refrigerated, and van transportation as well as less-than-truckload, flatbed, and intermodal services. The company is headquartered in Preston, with additional offices in Atlanta GA, Tampa FL, Denver CO, and Dallas TX.

Character Counts Mid Shore Inc is a Character Education organization serving Talbot, Dorchester, and Caroline Counties in Maryland. It has been a member of the National Character Counts Coalition since 1996 and fully subscribes to the coalition message that “Character Counts, Everywhere, All the Time.”
