One of TransAm Trucking’s company drivers, Elwin Hines Sr, recently placed first in the For-Hire Trucking category of Lytx Inc’s annual Driver of the Year awards. Hines received the recognition at Lytx’s annual Driver and Coach of the Year ceremony held at its annual User Group Conference in San Diego CA recently.
Along with his award, Hines received a $1,500 cash prize as well as a trip for two to San Diego for the awards ceremony. This trip included transportation, meals and a two-night stay at the Paradise Point Resort and Spa.
Hines chose trucking as a second career and earned his commercial driver license (CDL) at age 50. He started working with TransAm in 2008 as a regional driver and later transitioned to be a company driver. Hines reached a million miles of safe driving with TransAm in October 2016 and continues to be a role model to other drivers at the company.
Besides his driving career, Hines is also passionate about giving back to other drivers. He remains active in education at his alma mater, Tidewater Community College’s trucking school. Hines returns there often to speak and give advice to graduates and makes himself available to them after graduation if they have questions about trucking.
“We need to make sure the new generations of drivers know the rules of the road and the importance of following those rules,” said Hines. “Experienced drivers need to be willing to share tips and advice on how to stay safe over the road. Education needs to continue every day so we can all succeed.”
