FDA expands scope of ANAB recognition

Sept. 6, 2018
See how the US FDA has expanded the scope of ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board recognition.

The US Food and Drug Administration has expanded the scope of ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board (ANAB) recognition under the voluntary Accredited Third Party Certification Program. As of August 23, 2018, ANAB is recognized for these additional scopes:

•Acidified Foods (AF)

•Thermally Processed Low-Acid Foods Packaged in Hermetically Sealed Containers (LACF)

•Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) for Juice (Juice HACCP)

•Fish and Fishery Products (Seafood HACCP)

ANAB’s initial recognition included these scopes:

•Preventive Controls for Human Food rule (PCHF)

•Preventive Controls for Animal Food rule (PCAF)

•Produce Safety Rule (PSR)

FDA recognition means an accreditation body has the authority to accredit certification bodies (CBs) to conduct food safety audits and certify that eligible foreign food facilities (including farms), and the food for humans or animals they produce, meet applicable FDA food safety requirements.

The expansion of ANAB’s recognition means there are more opportunities for CBs to become accredited under the program.
