IRTA launches new Cold Carrier Certification at Cold Chain Expo

The International Refrigerated Transportation Association recently introduced new Cold Carrier Certification.

The International Refrigerated Transportation Association (IRTA) recently introduced new Cold Carrier Certification, which the association says is the first certification focused on excellence in refrigerated transportation.

IRTA made the announcement June 11 during the Global Cold Chain Expo.

“By earning the Cold Carrier Certification, a carrier will demonstrate the organization’s commitment to sanitary and safe perishable product transportation, differentiate the company from its competitors, and show its dedication to furthering the transportation and supply chain industries," said Rob Fay, president of Seminole Gulf Railway/Florida Freezer, and chairman of IRTA.

The Cold Carrier Certification includes two major components. The first is carrier conformance with the Sanitary Food Transportation Act through adoption of the IRTA Refrigerated Transportation Best Practices Guide. Second, carrier management personnel must prove their knowledge on specific requirements from the guide.

The certification program was piloted by seven companies: FFE Transportation Services, Great Plains Transport, JB Hunt, KeHE, Midwest Refrigerated Services, Trailiner and WEL Companies.

“This certification gives the customer peace of mind that they are building a relationship with the right carrier,” said Travis McCain, vice president of sales for Frozen Food Express, and a pilot program participant.

“We will proudly display the Cold Carrier Certification logo.”

McCain also participated in the GCCE panel discussion “Implementing Refrigerated Transportation Best Practices” for cold carriers. Other pilot participants who joined the penal included Josh Whitener, from Trailiner, and Jim Koeble, from Midwest Refrigerated. The session was moderated by PLM Trailer Leasing’s Don Durm.
