Ocado now is operating Sunswap’s zero-emission Endurance transport refrigeration units (TRUs) in its flagship double-decker trailer fleet.

The two Endurance TRUs now will keep Ocado’s fresh and frozen goods chilled using purpose-built electric refrigeration, the companies reported. Endurance eliminates diesel entirely, delivering true zero-emission performance alongside significant cost savings and high operational performance.

“We’re delighted that Ocado has chosen Sunswap’s zero-emission refrigeration technology,” Sunswap CEO Michael Lowe said in a news release. “This deployment demonstrates that electric refrigeration can meet the operational requirements of major grocery retailers while supporting their sustainability goals.”

By eliminating diesel, each Endurance unit saves 22.6 U.S. tons of CO2 annually while reducing operating costs by up to 81% compared to traditional refrigeration units, Sunswap said. The solar panels integrated into each trailer roof provide additional free energy to reduce grid charging requirements and extend range.

The British manufacturer’s Endurance units deliver up to 24 hours of frozen operation or two months of chilled operation on a single charge. This electric performance ensures reliable temperature control without the operational compromises often associated with sustainable technology.

This July deployment supports Ocado's commitment to achieving net-zero emissions across its entire value chain by 2040, with Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi)-validated goals including a 42% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030.
