The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has released the findings from research that examined benefits and costs to motor carriers associated with three onboard safety systems: roll stability control, forward collision warning, and lane departure warning.

This research, sponsored by FMCSA and led by the not-for profit American Transportation Research Institute, was designed to provide an objective and sophisticated review of the return-on-investment carriers can realistically expect from deploying these safety tools.

The investigations found that while large-truck crashes involve a complex series of critical events and factors, many can be prevented through the use of onboard safety systems.

Further, the research found that “in addition to safe carrier operational practices and initiatives, onboard safety technologies can be cost-effective investments for reducing injuries and fatalities in crashes involving large trucks.”

The reports are available online at www.atri-online.org.
