Kraig R Naasz, president and chief executive officer of the American Frozen Food Institute (AFFI), recently issued a statement urging the US Senate to pass the Safe and Efficient Transportation Act (S 3705), which was recently introduced by Sens Mike Crapo (R-ID), Herb Kohl (D-WI), and Susan Collins (R-ME). The bipartisan bill is identical to companion legislation introduced in the US House of Representatives in March by Reps Mike Michaud (D-ME) and Jeanne Schmidt (R-OH).
Naasz’s statement follows:
“Both the House and Senate versions of the bill would allow trucks equipped with a sixth axle and additional set of brakes to increase the size of their allowed pay-load per vehicle, meaning it would take fewer trucks and less fuel to transport our nation’s freight.
“The Safe and Efficient Transportation Act responsibly increases federal weight limits on Interstate highways, which will produce safer roads, reduced emissions, and less costly freight transportation.

“The frozen food industry has deep roots in the safe, efficient, and economical use of technology to deliver a healthy product to the American people. The longer we languish under the current inefficient weight restrictions, the more our economy and environment suffers. AFFI urges Congress to act swiftly in passing the Safe and Efficient Transportation Act.”
