Shorepower extends free power incentive

Shorepower Technologies has extended its free power incentive available for truckers.

Shorepower Technologies has extended its free power incentive available for truckers. They can now use Shorepower Technologies’ power pedestals for free through March 31, 2013.

“Truckers can fully utilize and see for themselves how nice it is to ‘plug in’ and run all their devices that can use AC power,” said Alan Bates, Shorepower’s vice-president of marketing. “Truckstop electrification can also work in concert with onboard battery-powered and diesel-powered auxiliary power units, which saves truck and APU batteries. It can help APUs run longer between scheduled maintenances and extend their service life. But most importantly, we want truckers to stay warm with either a space heater or onboard AC-compatible APU.”

Since the beginning of fourth quarter 2012, Shorepower Technologies has seen a 72% increase in the number of truckstops adding electric plug-in power pedestals to their locations and a 140% increase in the number of electrified spaces since the beginning of 2012.

Shorepower Technologies has installed 55 locations with power pedestals as of the end of 2012, with 23 locations going online in the fourth quarter. The 55 locations offer more than 1,250 electrified parking spaces, some with cable TV also available via the pedestal. Twenty of the locations provide connections to 480-volt power for hybrid refrigerated trailers.

Power pedestals are being installed as part of the Department of Energy’s Shorepower Truck Electrification Project (STEP) — administered through Cascade Sierra Solutions, a non-profit based in Eugene OR. Since 2010, STEP has resulted in a 210% increase in the number of truckstops across the United States adding power pedestals. To find truckstops with power pedestals, including 480-volt power connections for hybrid reefer units, check the US Department of Energy’s truckstop electrification locator at www.afdc.energy.gov/afdc/locator/tse/.
