Gordon Food Service to open North Carolina distribution site

Dec. 5, 2014
GORDON Food Service announced that it will open a new distribution center in Kannapolis NC.

GORDON Food Service announced that it will open a new distribution center in Kannapolis NC. The company signed a long-term lease agreement for a 300,000-square-foot distribution center in Afton Ridge Business Park on Glen Afton Boulevard.

Construction of the facility will begin later this autumn and is scheduled to be complete in autumn 2015. The facility is expected to employ approximately 275 people within the first five years of operation.

“We are excited to add the Kannapolis location to our distribution network,” said Jim Gordon, chief executive officer of Gordon Food Service. “The addition of this facility increases our capacity to serve national concepts, group purchasing organizations, and independent foodservice customers in the Southeast region of the United States.”

As the foodservice industry continues to evolve, Gordon Food Service is well-positioned for growth. The new facility in North Carolina supports the company’s long-term strategies to expand and to continue supporting its customers’ increasing needs.

“Gordon Food Service is a world leader in foodservice distribution,” said North Carolina Gov Pat McCrory. “This fourth-generation family-managed business will feel at home here in North Carolina, and we look forward to seeing them grow in the future.”

Kannapolis Mayor Darrell Hinnant said, “We are pleased to welcome Gordon Food Service as the newest member of the Kannapolis Business Community. With their location in the Afton Ridge Business Park, they will be able to successfully expand their operations into North Carolina. For over 100 years, the family company has built a solid reputation of excellence, and that makes them a perfect addition to our city.”

Gordon Food Service currently operates 22 distribution centers. The Kannapolis facility will be the company’s 16th distribution center in the US. The US distribution centers are in Grand Rapids (two) and Brighton (two) MI; Kenosha WI; Springfield OH; Shepherdsville KY; Greenville SC; Pottsville PA; and Plant City and Miami FL. Another distribution center operating as Perkins is in Taunton MA. Distribution centers operating as Glazier Foods Company are in Houston and Coppell TX. A distribution center in Aberdeen MD will be operational later in 2014.

Two new distribution centers are under construction, including one near Pittsburgh PA and another near Atlanta GA. Both are expected to be operational in 2015. Eight distribution centers are located in Canada.

What began in 1897 as a simple butter-and-egg delivery service is today North America’s largest privately held, family-managed broadline foodservice distributor. Gordon Food Service distributes to foodservice operators within the Midwest, Northeast, Southeast, and Southwest regions of the United States and coast-to-coast in Canada. The company also operates more than 170 GFS Marketplace retail stores in the United States, which are open to the public and provide restaurant-quality products and friendly, knowledgeable service without a membership fee.
