TRU owners: DPF purchase order deadline looms

Oct. 28, 2014
The California Air Resources Board (CARB) reminds model year (MY) 2007 TRU owners: To qualify for compliance extensions, only a few days remain before the October 31, 2014, purchase order deadline for ordering Level 3-verified diesel particulate filters (DPF) for retrofitting reefer engines.
The California Air Resources Board (CARB) reminds model year (MY) 2007 TRU owners: If you want to qualify for compliance extensions, only a few days remain before the October 31, 2014, purchase order deadline for ordering Level 3-verified diesel particulate filters (DPF) for retrofitting reefer engines. MY 2007 transport refrigeration unit (TRU) and TRU generator set engines must comply with CARB’s TRU regulation’s in-use performance standards by December 31, 2014. The TRU regulation does not allow compliance extensions if orders for verified diesel emissions control strategies, such as Level 3 DPFs, are placed after October 31 and installation is not completed by December 31, 2014.

However, if MY 2007 TRU owners order verified diesel emissions control strategies (VDECS), such as Level 3 DPFs, by the end of October, installation by the end of 2014 is likely possible. More importantly, if you order a Level 3 DPF before October 31 and delivery or installation is delayed so that you can’t comply by the end of 2014, you may qualify for a compliance extension. To qualify for compliance extension: •Purchase orders for Level 3 DPFs must be placed by October 31. •The TRU must be registered in CARB’s Equipment Registration (ARBER) system. •An application for extension must be submitted to CARB with the required documentation by December 31. MY 2007 TRU owners that place orders for Level 3 VDECS after October 31 will not qualify for this compliance extension if they discover they cannot comply by December 31 due to delays in delivery or installation. The purchase order deadline for ordering replacement engines and units has already passed—it was August 31, 2014.  Therefore, if you order replacement engines or units after August 31 and installation is delayed until after December 31, 2014, you will not qualify for a compliance extension. To obtain general information about the TRU Regulation and VDECS, go to www.arb.ca.gov/diesel/tru/tru.htm. For answers to questions about compliance or registration in ARBER, call the TRU Help Line at 1-888-878-2826 or 1-916-327-8737.
