The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently recognized Schneider for its commitment to green initiatives with its 10th SmartWay Excellence Award.

The honor recognizes Schneider’s leadership in freight supply chain environmental performance and energy efficiency. The award is the EPA’s highest recognition for organizations that significantly reduce the environmental impacts of the freight sector and is reserved for the best of SmartWay’s partners.

“This year, the US EPA’s SmartWay Transport Partnership is recognizing 50 truck carriers and five multimodal carriers as recipients of the 2019 SmartWay Excellence Award,” said Sarah Dunham, the EPA’s director of the Office of Transportation and Air Quality. “These awardees are the top 2% of environmental performers among all of our SmartWay Partners.

“They are redefining best practices for freight transport by reducing fuel costs and improving the public health of the communities they serve.”

Schneider also made the EPA’s SmartWay High Performer list, which recognizes transportation companies that are a step ahead in meeting the challenges of the sustainable goods movement. Schneider, which was honored for its fuel efficiency improvement and reduction of carbon emissions, has earned the designation each of the three years since it was established. As one of only five multimodal carriers to make the list, the award reinforces Schneider’s reputation as a sustainability leader in the industry.

“Fuel efficiency, freight consolidation and energy conservation have been the tenets of Schneider’s sustainability initiatives for over 40 years,” said Rob Reich, executive vice president and chief administrative officer at Schneider. “Investing in energy-efficient technologies and collaborating with research and environmental groups enable us to improve our sustainability practices and elevate the industry as a whole. These efforts benefit our customers and our business, as well as protect the precious natural resources we all share.”

Since the SmartWay Transport Partnership program began in 2004, Schneider and its fellow SmartWay partners have saved a total of 280 million barrels of oil and $37 billion in fuel costs, while reducing carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide and particulate matter by more than 134 million metric tons.

Among its sustainability efforts, Schneider has implemented an array of fuel-efficient features and continues to test, develop and deploy different technologies and practices to improve its performance and results.
