TEN Cool earns U.S. patent for bumper system to boost refrigerated trailer efficiency
Key takeaways
- TEN Cool’s patented bumper system increases refrigerated trailer load capacity and improves airflow for temperature-sensitive cargo.
- Fleets using the system can reduce fuel consumption, shorten engine run times, and lower operating costs.
- Modular design allows flexible trailer use, minimizes product damage, and extends equipment life for specialized transport.
TEN Cool was recently awarded a U.S. utility patent (No. 12,409,770) for its bumper system. The company, which provides temperature-controlled trailers through its refrigerated division of TEN (Transportation Equipment Network), developed the system to improve airflow, protect cargo, and increase operational flexibility without the cost of custom trailer builds. An international patent for the bumper system is also pending.
The bumper system was designed to address challenges in dairy and foodservice distribution, including product damage, limited airflow, and specialized equipment. Fleets using the system report improvements in efficiency and savings. One North American fleet achieved over $1 million in annual savings across 59 refrigerated trailers through increased load capacity, reduced fuel consumption, and enhanced operational efficiency.
The system allows for up to two additional pallets per load, improves airflow, and reduces product damage and spoilage, supporting cost control and temperature consistency in perishable supply chains. Fleets also benefit from shorter engine run times, improved fuel efficiency, and flexible trailer use.
“Our bumper system is a breakthrough for refrigerated trailers,” Don White, VP of refrigerated strategy and solutions at TEN Cool, said. “It protects products in transit, reduces costly damage, and streamlines fleet operations. This innovation came from listening to our customers and working closely with them to develop a smarter, more efficient solution. This patent reflects the ingenuity and real-world value our team delivers to the industry.”
