Key takeaways

  • U.K.-based Noble Foods deploys solar and battery-powered refrigeration units to reduce fleet CO2 emissions on national routes.
  • Zero-emission units maintain strict temperature control, ensuring egg quality across rural and urban deliveries.
  • Adoption of Endurance units delivers both environmental benefits and operational savings of approximately £1.16 million or $1.5M.

Noble Foods recently rolled out 40 Sunswap Endurance zero-emission transport refrigeration units across its national routes. The U.K.-based company, which produces the Happy Eggs brand of responsibly sourced eggs, is adopting battery and solar-powered refrigeration technology to reduce CO2 emissions while maintaining temperature control during transport. The Endurance units can generate most of their cooling power from integrated roof-mounted solar panels, with additional power supplied by grid electricity during loading and unloading.

The units completed nine days of testing over rural routes, achieving 100% reliability and completing eight delivery cycles without operational disruptions. By replacing traditional diesel-powered refrigeration, Noble Foods expects to reduce fleet emissions by up to 3,439 tons over the units’ lifetime and deliver operational savings of approximately $1.5 million.

"This partnership with Sunswap represents a meaningful step in our journey toward our Net Zero commitments," Glenn Evans, group head of sustainability, said. "The technology has proven capable of maintaining the precise temperature control essential for egg quality while significantly reducing our transport emissions. This supports both our sustainability objectives and the green credentials of consumer-facing brands such as Happy Eggs."
