• Idaho senate gives thumbs up to plan to allow larger trucks

    March 11, 2013

The Idaho State Senate has backed a plan aimed at allowing trucks up to 129,000 lbs. on more miles of Idaho roads. The plan is backed by the Idaho Trucking Assn. that said allowing larger trucks on more state highways will lower shipping costs and boost the state’s economy.

In a 22-13 vote, the senate agreed to allow big trucks on more of the state’s roads, provided local highway districts agree based on criteria set by the Idaho Transportation Dept.. The vote came after spirited debate focusing on safety of expanding big trucks to much of Idaho, particularly its winding northern forest roadways.

Since 2003, Idaho has allowed 129,000-pound trucks on select southern routes. The senate okay will send the proposal to the house, according to a Times-News report.
