Routine truck inspection turns up 4 tons of marijuana

The Texas Dept. of Public Safety said a routine vehicle inspection last week resulted in the arrest of a Texas trucker when close to 4 tons of marijuana valued at $3.4 million was found stowed in his tanker trailer.

According to CBS affiliate KZTV news, a trooper stopped the truck in San Patricio County, outside of Corpus Christi, TX, to perform a routine visual inspection of the vehicle, but instead found 8,000 lbs. of pot concealed inside.

The 45-year-old driver, Paul Anthony Simmons of Robstown, was arrested for possession of marijuana and was held on $1 million bond, The Independent reports.

“It’s a big, significant seizure,” a Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman said.
