The cotton truck had become stuck at the crossing last Friday and the train didn’t have enough time to even slow down, striking the trailer and throwing plumes of cotton into the air in the high-speed collision.

“We saw the trucker go across the tracks and got stuck, started spinning out, smoking the wheels underneath,” witness Kevin Harlow said.

The Gaston Gazette reported it was the fourth collision at a rail level crossing in the city since 2011.  Trucks are banned from using the crossings because of the danger of catching the bottom of their vehicles. However, the ban is sometimes ignored, according to the report.

No one was injured in Friday’s accident.
