Major work on California Interstate 80, Highway 49 will disrupt traffic

July 17, 2012

Drivers can expect lane and ramp closures and one-way traffic controls throughout this month as construction work takes place on Interstate 80 — a major east–west route between California and Nevada — and Highway 49 in Nevada and Placer counties.

According a report in the Sacramento Bee, the California Dept. of Transportation’s roadwork schedule includes:

  • One-way controls will be in effect for nighttime and early morning paving on Highway 49 from Little Valley Road to Cornette Way between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 9 p.m. Friday to 8 a.m. Saturday.
  • Construction will take place on Interstate 80 during the same dates from Carpenter Flat to Hampshire Rock, as work continues on the $167 million Emigrant Gap project. That job — expected to be completed in the fall of 2013 — includes total roadway replacement and improved drainage and collection systems.
  • From Tuesday to July 22, westbound I-80 lane and ramp closures are planned from Yuba Gap to the Rainbow exit, and traffic will be shifted to one 11-foot lane between 10 p.m. and 9 a.m. on those dates.
  • Work has resumed on a $29 million Highway 49/La Barr Meadows project that will widen the road to four lanes just south of Grass Valley. Completion of that project is expected by fall, according to Caltrans.
