The finale of the Freightliner Trucks’ “Run Smart Hauler Challenge” took place on Oct. 13 and Tony Sessions, driver of the #38 hauler for Turner Motorsports, claimed the grand prize and Freightliner Trucks trophy.
Freightliner Trucks, the official hauler of NASCAR, said it holds the competition every year to test the driving abilities of NASCAR team-hauler drivers. Whichever driver most successfully navigates the turns and obstacles of the championship course is crowned the winner and recognized as the year’s top hauler. This year’s championship took place at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Charlotte, N.C.
Sessions earned a spot in the championship after besting a starting field of 43 NASCAR hauler drivers in qualifying events held throughout the year.
“The course was very difficult and I am still in shock that I made it all the way to the end,” said Sessions. “I am so thankful to Freightliner for hosting the challenge and Turner Motorsports for supporting my participation. I am honored to have been included in the competition.”
Bill Lewis of Michael Waltrip Racing claimed second place, Tim Clancy of Joe Gibbs Racing finished third, and Tom McCrimmon of Joe Gibbs Racing came in fourth.
“Tony showcased an expert handle of his truck, and Freightliner Trucks congratulates him on his victory,” noted Stacey Premo, motorsports marketing manager for Freightliner Trucks. “All of our Hauler Challenge participants displayed excellent awareness and vehicle control on the course”
Freightliner said the series will return in 2013 with a kickoff event in Las Vegas.
