Sniper may be prowling Michigan highways

Nov. 1, 2012

Drivers in southeastern Michigan should stay alert after a spate of new shootings at vehicles along or near Interstate 96, including one over the weekend that injured a driver for the first time, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.

A law-enforcement task force is investigating reports of 25 roadway shootings across four counties in the region west of Detroit since Oct. 16. The effort is being led by police in Wixom, MI, where 10 of the shootings occurred. More than 100 people are working full-time on the task force, officials said at a Monday news conference.

The latest scare came Monday morning when a vehicle was hit by a projectile on U.S. Route 23, near the I-96 corridor.

Clarence Goodlein, Wixom Police Director, said the suspect appears to be acting alone during the day and early evening, using a handgun to shoot mainly into oncoming traffic from a black midsize car, possibly a Toyota Camry or Oldsmobile Alero that is about 10 to 12 years old.

On Monday, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Federal Bureau of Investigation offered a reward of $100,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.
