Trucking company involved in deadly crash has history of safety violations

Dec. 26, 2012

The semi truck that crashed with other vehicles, caught fire and caused a chain-reaction accident that killed a woman on the Long Island Expressway (LIE) on Dec. 19, came from a trucking company with a bad safety record.

A Jewell Transportation tractor-trailer collided with several other vehicles and caused a fatal 35-car pileup on the LIE, killing one woman and leaving another driver critically injured. The chain-reaction of fiery crashes left a total of 33 people injured.

According to a report by MY Fox NY, Jewell Transportation Inc., based in Vermont, was cited at least 23 times for unsafe driving since 2011. Federal transportation records show that the fleet’s trucks have been involved in several accidents, including a fatal crash last July in upstate New York.

Authorities have not indicated yet if the accident was the truck driver’s fault. An attorney for the trucking company and the driver said they are cooperating with the investigation.
