California Highway Patrol warns of 'tent city' driver distraction
The California Highway Patrol invited a local news reporter on a ride-along to help warn the public of the driver distraction problems caused by several “tent cities” that have popped up along some of Southern California’s busiest freeways.
10 News San Diego reported that the “tent cities” created by the homeless are becoming a distraction to drivers.
The California Highway Patrol said not only are the homeless communities causing a danger to drivers by diverting their attention, they are leading to other highway deaths. Thirty pedestrians have been killed crossing freeways in the San Diego area since 2010, and 55 have been injured.
“I would say the majority of the people that are struck are transient or homeless,” said CHP Officer Jake Sanchez.
