Volvo Trucks awarded Tidewater Transit Co., Inc., and MCO Transport, Inc., as recipients of its 5thannual safety awards, given to fleets based on their accident frequency rates using the U.S. Department of Transportation definition of a “recordable accident” and their safety and accident prevention programs.

Tidewater Transit (pictured at left) gained Volvo’s safety ward in the over 20 million mile category in part for its unique “Top Gun” training program for new drivers, which pairs new hires with a hand-picked driver dubbed a "Top Gun trainer" who oversees the full training of a new driver and ensures they have the knowledge and skills needed to operate safely on the road.

Additionally, Tidewater Transit recognizes safe drivers with a quarterly cash bonus program, which includes presentation of certificates and plaques during company events when families are in attendance.

MCO Transport of Wilmington, NC (pictured at left), received the award in the under 20 million miles category in part due to its “multifaceted” approach to safety, built around what the carrier called "clearly defined policies and procedures."

MCO also holds mandatory quarterly safety meetings and utilize a recognition program for drivers who receive no violations during DOT roadside inspections. MCO’s fleet of 88 trucks also logged over 5.97 million last year with just one recordable accident, equating to an accident frequency rate of 0.167.

“Tidewater Transit and MCO Transport have made safety a top priority, and their outstanding performance reflects that commitment,” said Gӧran Nyberg, president of Volvo Trucks North American sales & marketing, in a statement – adding that Michelin America Truck Tires again joined Volvo as a supporting sponsor of the award.

“The winners of this year’s award understand the importance of integrating safety into every facet of their operations,” he noted.
