Truckers may face more heavy rains in north central U.S.

July 25, 2012

There is the potential for another one to two inches of rain to fall over the balance of the week in some of the areas that were hardest hit by thunderstorms earlier this week, including southern Minnesota, Ohio and northeastern Kentucky. This is according to AccuWeather.com, which issued its latest report on weather patterns in the U.S. on July 24.

“The ground will soak up much of the rain that falls,” noted Alex Sosnowski, AccuWeather.com expert senior meteorologist, who prepared the report. However, in localized areas the rain will run off, leading to flash and urban flooding problems” —something fleets should bear in mind.

While those on the highway may have reason to grumble, the rain could bring some modest relief to farmers and to others tied to the agriculture industry. “The rain is coming too late for much of the corn crop in the region. However, it will be enough to save some major soybean areas. The rain can also begin the road to recovery, in a small way, in terms of streams and reservoirs, or at least prevent the situation from getting worse,”noted Sosnowski in the report.
