How does one of North America’s largest carriers manage a dashcam deployment across more than 8,000 trucks and 10,000 drivers?
Adam Cassidy, senior director of safety at Werner Enterprises (No. 11 on the FleetOwner 500: For-Hire, breaks down Werner’s five-year evolution with Samsara's camera technology, moving from basic forward-facing dash cams to an advanced AI multicam setup.
Werner pivoted from a prior event-based camera provider to Samsara about five years ago. The initial fleet-wide rollout of forward-facing dash cams took 12 to 24 months—and Werner recently expanded its tech stack to deploy side-view cameras and AI multicam connectors. Due to driver privacy concerns, Werner does not use inward-facing cameras.
As a fleet would expect, some drivers were initially skeptical of the cameras. Cassidy called the distribution of driver skepticism a bell curve: one tail of the population was vocally opposed, and one tail was interested, but the majority were agnostic about forward-facing cameras.
And the cameras have proven useful for drivers. Front-facing cameras have disproven fraudulent claims against some drivers, and side-view cameras have helped drastically reduce sideswipe accidents. Werner now plans to roll out multicam systems across all trucks in the coming years.
