The GlobalWave satellite-based wireless communications and tracking system developed by Vistar Telecommunications has been acquired by TransCore, a privately held transportation services company that makes the RFID products used for the SMART border crossing system as well as for many electronic toll collection networks.
The GlobalWave system allows fleets to monitor, track, manage and communicate with trucks and other mobile assets from a Web interface. It has six ground control stations providing wireless service to more than 20,000 users on five continents, according to TransCore.
The company plans to integrate the satellite network with its RFID systems “to provide end-to-end visibility for commercial and government applications,” according to John Worthington, TransCore's president and CEO.
Services envisioned include automated fuel-tax reporting, remote equipment monitoring and secure chain-of-custody services for security applications.
