Nextel handsets with GPS capability can give truck drivers turn-by-turn, truck-specific directions with a new service from ALK Technologies. The new PC*Miler|Mobile service runs on a variety of Nextel's Motorola handsets, including its i58, i88, i605 and i860 phones.

In addition to monitoring height restrictions, the service can provide hazardous materials and 53-ft. trailer routes. Directions are automatically recalculated if a turn is missed. Destinations can be entered manually on the handset by the driver or preloaded by dispatch.

The web-based application not only delivers truck-legal routing help for drivers, but also provides fleet managers with real-time information on truck location, speed and heading through a secure web site, according to ALK.

Cost for the new navigation service starts at $25/mo. per driver, and volume discounts are available.
