SmarTire, a British Columbia-based maker of tire pressure monitoring (TPM) systems, recently filed a patent application in the U.S. for an external valve sensor designed for use with its TPM system for commercial vehicles.

SmarTire’s external valve sensors, according to the maker, offer more simple installation and easier maintenance over existing internal sensor products.

“This technological innovation further strengthens our product position and directly addresses the needs of the commercial market,” said David Warkentin, vp of sales & marketing. “SmarTire’s external valve sensors will reduce the installation costs of tire-pressure monitoring systems and enable faster implementation for large fleets during retrofit in the aftermarket.”

Release of the external sensors is expected to take place sometime during the second quarter of 2007.
