GPS Insight has launched what it says is the next generation of user-defined alerts for fleet management. The new alerts will help customers react to unexpected situations as well as notify drivers of violations in real time via SMS text message or email to their phone, the company said.

Speeding, idling, long stop, landmark visit and odd-hours/weekend usage can all be used to tailor an alert to a particular customer. Among the notifications now available are alerts for when drivers are at their home within work hours on weekdays; excessive idling is occurring except in known maintenance areas; and speeding is taking place within known construction area. There are also, alerts for different speeds during different times of day such as daytime and nighttime, and driver alerts for when their vehicle moves from their home at night in case it is stolen.

The first customer to use these alerts reduced total idling from 42% to 27% within two months, saving 40,000 gal. of fuel, said GPS Insight.
