Unisys Corp., Fidelica Microsystems Inc. and Abeo Corp. are finalizing the design of a biometric radio frequency identification (RFID) badge as part of a Wireless Personal Identification Credential (WPIC) project for air cargo truck drivers.

The WPIC pilot, part of the Transportation Security Administration's sponsored Airport Access Control Pilot Program (AACPP), will be conducted at the Washington Dulles International Airport to evaluate ID technologies to increase cargo security.

This project will evaluate and demonstrate a wireless credential that would be used to verify the identities of truck drivers bringing loose cargo to an air cargo warehouse, said Robert Allen, vp—business development of Fidelica Microsystems. “Conclusive identification of registered shippers is critical to transportation security,” he said. “Our fingerprint imaging technology was designed to enable biometric authentication in credentials as thin as a credit card.”

Unisys said the WPIC pilot—overseen directly by the TSA—is in the final stages of development and scheduled to be demonstrated this fall.
