A research tool that monitors freight performance on North American highways using wireless truck position data has garnered the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) the 2008 Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) Management & Operations Award.

The “Freight Performance Measures” (FPM) initiative—sponsored, designed and tested over a five-year span by ATRI and FHWA—monitors travel times and speeds on over 200,000 mi. of roadway to calculate changes as well as identify system reliability, freight bottlenecks and truck parking issues, ATRI said.

ITE International president Alfred Guebert presented the award to ATRI and FHWA at the 2008 ITE annual meeting this week in Anaheim, CA.
