One of the highlights at this year’s Waste Expo, which kicks off today and runs through Thursday in Las Vegas, is the hybrid hydraulic Peterbilt Model 320 the manufacturer and Eaton Corp. are showcasing.
The Model 320, outfitted for stop-and-go residential refuse applications, utilizes Hydraulic Launch Assist (HLA) technology to capture the truck’s kinetic energy during braking to assist in the launching and acceleration of the vehicle, Eaton said. Because of this, Peterbilt estimates the truck delivers 15 to 30% better fuel economy, reduces emissions and reduces annual brake realignment services by 50%.
"The HLA system developed by Eaton directly impacts fuel savings, brake life and provides increased productivity," said Robert Golin, business lead for the HLA system at Eaton. "This system was designed with the customer in mind. It’s a simple hybrid system with emphasis on reliability and assuring the customer an attractive payback. Peterbilt has been a key partner with Eaton in the development and introduction of the hydraulic hybrid system."
