ParkingCarma has announced its Smart Parking system--which identifies the nearest available truck parking spot to drivers--will be used on California’s Interstate 5 (I-5). I-5 recently received more than $5 million in federal support towards alleviating the frustration of truckers looking for parking on congested routes, ParkingCarma said.

According to the company, the system--which works with Navteq’s truck parking mapping and routing services--improves fuel efficiency, reduces illegal parking and makes driving safer by eliminating time looking for spots.

"Through our Smart Parking information network, truckers will be able to access data about available parking spaces - via cell phone, the Internet, or an onboard computer,” said Rick Warner, CEO of ParkingCarma.

I-5 was one of two interstates (along with I-95) awarded $5 million apiece under the U.S. Dept. of Transportation’s national congestion initiative, Corridors of the Future. The I-5 contract was awarded to the California Dept. of Transportation, who will work with ParkingCarma, Navteq, and University of California, Berkley/TSRC to monitor parking availability for transmission to truckers, ParkingCarma said.
