SmartDrive names vp of worldwide sales, strategic program manager

Oct. 30, 2013

SmartDrive Systems has made two appointments to strengthen its management team.

Michael Baker has been named vice president of worldwide sales and Marty Fletcher has joined as strategic program manager.

SmartDrive provides driving performance solutions to reduce collisions and improve fuel efficiency.

Baker has over 20 years of experience in the technology, trucking and construction industries. He will focus on developing customer acquisition and retention strategies, building and motivating high performance teams, and creating a global go-to-market sales organization, the company said.

“Fleets today are under significant pressure to improve safety while keeping costs under control,” said Baker.  “The SmartDrive platform is a game-changer and one of the more exciting and effective programs I have seen in over twenty years in the industry. Their innovative approach combining video and vehicle data with an easy-to-implement coaching program drives results.  And because the program is based on an open platform, customers know their investment is protected.  It is a winning combination and I am proud to join the team.”

Prior to SmartDrive, Baker worked for Navman Wireless, Qualcomm Omnitracs and HighwayMaster.

“We are thrilled to have Mike join the team,” said Steve Mitgang, CEO of SmartDrive.  “As an industry veteran with over 20 years of experience in telematics, Mike understands the priorities of today’s fleets.  He shares our commitment to delivering an innovative and effective program that helps commercial fleets and transit agencies achieve their operational goals without compromising safety.”

Fletcher has more than 40 years of engineering experience in the automotive and trucking industries. A fuel efficiency specialist, specifically in the combination of vehicle systems, drivetrain and aerodynamics, he has also served as a party liaison to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) for accident investigations, particularly for accidents involving collision avoidance systems. Fletcher was a participant fleet administrator for the Intelligent Vehicle Initiative conducted by the DOT, NHTSA, and FMCSA and a fleet administrator for the EPA SmartWay Program.

“It has been a long time since I’ve seen a product that delivers such immediate and measurable results on fleet safety, helping reduce collisions and therefore save lives,” said Fletcher. “I am enthusiastic about the future of this company, and more importantly, its effect on the safety of our drivers and roads.”
